Elvira Aguirre was the mestiza daughter of Lope Aguirre and an unknown native American mother. He took her with him when he joined Pedro Ursua’s 1560 expedition to find El Dorado. As the expedition travelled first down the Huallaga and then the Amazon, it degenerated into a series of coups and assassinations, finally to be led by Lope Aguirre, who renounced the Spanish Crown and continued to the Atlantic. Eventually he was caught by a force dispatched by King Philip, and killed. Before he died though, he killed Elvira, to save her from the degradations he was sure would be her fate.
