Elvira Aguirre with her monkey. Elvira was Lope Aguirre’s daughter. He took her with him on his expedition to find El Dorado. Their descent down the Maranon river become a succession of violent coups and eventually a rebellion against the Spanish Crown. When the King’s forces finally caught up with Lope, the last thing he did before he was killed, was to stab Elvira to death, to save her from “becoming a mattress for blackguards”. Lope was dismembered, and parts were sent to various Spanish towns in South America, to serve as an example. Nothing is known of Elvira but her name and her fate.
